Funerals & Memorials
At Holy Cross Parish and Friary, we believe that in life and in death we belong to God. In times of loss, the Church is called to surround the grieving with prayer, tenderness, reverence, and hope. Our funeral and memorial ministry is offered so that families may be comforted, the departed may be commended to the mercy of God, and the promise of the resurrection may be proclaimed with faith.
We are honored to walk with individuals and families through illness, dying, death, mourning, and remembrance. Whether you are making plans in advance, seeking care for a loved one who is nearing death, or needing support after a loss, Holy Cross Parish and Friary is here to serve with compassion, prayer, and pastoral care.
Christian Hope in the Face of Death
The Church meets death not with denial, but with prayer and hope in Jesus Christ, who has conquered death and opened the way of eternal life. In Christian faith, death is not the end of the story. We entrust the departed to the mercy of God and commend them into the loving hands of the Lord.
Funeral rites and memorial prayers are acts of worship, remembrance, and consolation. They allow the Church to grieve honestly, pray faithfully, and proclaim the hope of the resurrection even in the midst of sorrow.
Pastoral Care Before Death
The Church’s care begins long before the time of death. Holy Cross Parish and Friary offers prayer, pastoral support, Holy Communion, and Anointing of the Sick for those who are ill, frail, hospitalized, in hospice, or nearing the end of life.
These moments are sacred and often deeply emotional. No one should face serious illness or the approach of death without the comfort of prayer and the support of the Church. We encourage families to contact the parish as early as possible when a loved one is in need of pastoral care.
We are here to pray, to listen, to accompany, and to bring the consolations of faith in times of uncertainty and sorrow.
When Death Has Occurred
When a death occurs, we encourage families to contact Holy Cross Parish and Friary as soon as possible. The Church can assist with immediate prayers, pastoral support, and guidance regarding funeral or memorial planning.
In the first hours and days after a death, families often carry both grief and many practical responsibilities. Our desire is to offer stability, compassion, and spiritual care during that difficult time.
We will do our best to help families move through this time with reverence, clarity, and the support of the Church’s prayer.
Funeral Liturgies
A Christian funeral is an act of worship in which the Church commends the departed to God, gives thanks for their life, prays for mercy, and proclaims the resurrection of Jesus Christ. At Holy Cross Parish and Friary, funeral liturgies are prepared with reverence, pastoral care, and respect for the dignity of the person who has died.
We work with families to prepare a funeral that is prayerful, faithful, and appropriate to the life being remembered. This may include Scripture readings, prayers, hymns or music, and the shape of the liturgy itself.
Whether simple or more formal, the funeral should reflect the Christian hope with which the Church accompanies the faithful from this life into the mercy of God.
Memorial Services
In some circumstances, families may desire a memorial service rather than a full funeral liturgy, or may seek a service after a burial or cremation has already taken place. Holy Cross Parish and Friary is glad to offer memorial services that provide space for prayer, remembrance, thanksgiving, and hope.
These services can be especially meaningful when families need a dedicated time to gather before God, honor a loved one’s memory, and receive the support of the Church’s prayer.
Burial, Committal, and Graveside Prayer
The Church also offers prayers at the place of burial or committal. These rites bring reverence and blessing to the final resting place and surround the moment of committal with Scripture, prayer, and Christian hope.
Graveside prayers may be part of the funeral liturgy or may be offered separately, depending on the needs of the family and the circumstances of the burial or interment.
Care for the Grieving
Grief does not end when the service is over. The Church’s care continues beyond the day of the funeral or memorial. Holy Cross Parish and Friary seeks to accompany grieving individuals and families with ongoing prayer, compassion, and pastoral support.
Mourning often unfolds slowly, and every person’s grief is different. We encourage those who are grieving to remain in contact with the parish if prayer, conversation, remembrance, or spiritual support would be helpful.
The Church is called to bear one another’s burdens, and we are honored to share that care.
Planning in Advance
Some individuals and families find peace in making funeral or memorial plans in advance. This can be a thoughtful and loving way to express wishes clearly and spare loved ones some uncertainty later.
If you would like to speak about advance planning for funeral rites, memorial services, pastoral care, or end-of-life spiritual support, Holy Cross Parish and Friary would be honored to assist you.
